After the treatment, the prostate swells and prevents urine passing along the urethra. Additional surgery is performed after HIFU to remove the swollen prostate that is causing the blockage. A catheter is inserted post surgery to remove urine until all the swelling reduces which can take between 3 and 8 days to subside.
Usually, the day after surgery, the patient is discharged, and the catheter is removed at home by a district nurse. Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection.
It is normal to feel some discomfort whilst the catheter is in place and immediately after it has been removed. Often there will be mild bleeding at the start of voiding. Sometimes the patient experiences urgency and frequency with possible mild leakage on coughing. These symptoms ease and generally disappear.
