HIFU Prostate
HIFU Prostate Treatment

Under general anaesthetic, a probe is inserted into the rectum. This probe contains a small camera and the treatment transducer which emits the focused ultrasound. Both are contained within a latex balloon which is filled with cooled liquid.

Using a computer, which controls the HIFU prostate treatment, the probe emits different beams of high intensity ultrasound which meet at a focal point where the dramatic increase in temperature destroys cells in the targeted zone. The surgeon controls the precise area to be treated by entering the HIFU treatment plan into the computer.

Each application of the ultrasound destroys approximately 20 mm by 2 mm area. By moving the focal point, the whole prostate can be treated.

Safety is ensured through constant monitoring:

  • continuous control of the probe to prevent damage to the rectum
  • a patient movement detector to make sure the patient lies still and the prostate stays on target
  • continuous monitoring of the temperature
  • continous control of power to prevent power surges.
